For years, every spring started the same way.
I’d drag out the old tiller, spend hours wrestling it through our heavy clay soil, and then spend the rest of the season pulling weeds that seemed to grow faster than my vegetables. Then one day I finally discovered the secret to growing a successful, low-maintenance garden: raised beds. This is me 15 years ago. Look at that poor dusty clay looking soil and all the weeds. What was I thinking?

The Day I Ditched the Tiller
Once I built my first raised bed, everything changed.
No more tilling, no more compacted clay, and no more muddy boots after a spring rain.
Now I have 6 raised garden beds, have well-draining soil that’s easy to work with, and I can grow more vegetables in a smaller space than I ever could in my traditional garden.
Why I Love Raised Bed Gardening
After years of trial and error, here’s why I’ll never go back to in-ground gardening again:

1. Healthier Soil (and Easier to Improve)
With a raised bed, you’re in control of what’s inside it.
You can build rich soil with compost, aged manure, and cover crops — instead of trying to amend a huge patch of hard clay.
I plant cover crops like clover or rye in the off-season, then turn them under before spring planting. They add nutrients naturally, improve drainage, and make the soil light and crumbly.
2. You Save Money and Time
Because you’re working in a smaller space, every shovel of compost or bag of organic fertilizer goes further.
It’s easier to concentrate your efforts (and your budget) in a few productive beds than to spread everything thin over a large area.
3. Weed Control Becomes Simple
In my raised beds, weeds don’t stand a chance.
I plant intensively, which shades out weed growth, and I can easily pull the few that do pop up. No more hours spent hoeing between long rows!
4. Better Drainage and Easier Watering
Clay soil holds too much water, while sandy soil drains too fast. In raised beds, you control the texture.
Rain drains away naturally, and you can direct watering exactly where it’s needed — the root zone.
5. Perfect for Small Spaces
Whether you have a backyard, patio, or side yard, raised beds fit almost anywhere.
You can garden productively in just a few square feet — no tractor or tiller required!

I went with raised beds to make my gardening easier about 10 years ago following a traumatic heat injury. I found
it a lot easier.
Dorothy,
Yes and I get older they are great for my back!
