This fall I am focusing on my backyard space and planning projects to make it more enjoyable. My main project will be my backyard shed. If you’re looking to make the most of your garden year-round, a little planning can go a long way. No matter the size of your space, there are simple ways to enjoy it more and get even more out of it.
Start With Your Vision
Ask yourself what kind of outdoor space you want. Do you see it as a peaceful retreat, a productive vegetable patch, or a place for the kids to play? Maybe it’s all three—or maybe it’s where you’d love to host summer BBQs with friends. The clearer you are about the purpose of your garden, the easier it is to make it work for you.

Use Every Corner
It’s easy for parts of the garden to go unused. Small gardens can benefit by thinking vertical—trellises, wall planters, and hanging baskets can add a lot of growing room. Larger gardens can be divided into zones: a spot for dining, a veggie bed, maybe a little wildflower corner. Breaking it into areas helps you maximize what you have.
Make It Comfortable
If you want to spend more time outside, comfort is key. Shade, seating, and cozy touches make all the difference. After visiting a client’s backyard recently, I came away determined to create a dining or seating area on my patio. She had a beautiful pergola with a chandelier and a long table for meals. You may want to contact a pergola contractor to ensure you have some sun coverage, and adding quality patio furniture makes the space far more inviting.
Welcome the Wildlife
Your garden isn’t just for you—it’s also a place for the local wildlife. Planting a variety of flowers and herbs will bring in pollinators that help your vegetables thrive, while also adding more life and movement to the space. It’s a win-win for you and the garden.

At the end of the day, your garden should be more than just a patch of green—it should be a place that reflects how you want to live. Whether that means sipping coffee under a pergola, hosting summer barbecues, or simply enjoying the buzz of pollinators around your flowers, the little choices you make now can help you enjoy your outdoor space in every season.
