Think Fall Is the End of Garden Season? Think Again.
You don’t have to say goodbye to fresh vegetables just because summer’s winding down. In fact, fall is one of my favorite —and often overlooked—times to grow a garden, especially if you love leafy greens, root veggies, and crisp-weather crops that actually prefer cooler temps.
What to Grow in a Fall Garden (Beginner-Friendly)
Before you grab seedlings at the plant sale or browse the seed rack, take a minute to think through your space and timing. Some crops grow quickly from seed; others need a head start as seedlings. And your first frost date? That’s the key to getting the timing right.
Best Started as Seedlings (Need a Head Start)
These vegetables take longer to mature and are best planted as starts:
-
Cabbage
-
Broccoli
-
Cauliflower
-
Brussels sprouts
(Plant these at least 6 weeks before your first frost.)
🌱 Easy-to-Grow from Seed (Great for Beginners)
These are fast, and fall-friendly:
-
Lettuce
-
Spinach
-
Kale
-
Carrots
-
Beets
-
Sugar snap peas
-
Snow peas
Fall Gardening Tips:
-
Know your first frost date and count backwards to find your planting window.
- Most fall vegetables should be planted about 6 to 8 weeks before your first expected frost date, giving them enough time to mature before cold weather sets in.
-
Got leftover seeds? Many fall crops can be saved for early spring.
-
Look for “container friendly” on seed packets if space is tight.
