While there may not be a lot of gardening happening during the winter months, there are still plenty of tasks you can do now to prepare your garden for the busy spring season. In my garden, I have six raised beds, but only two are in use right now. One is home to my cool-season vegetables—broccoli, collard greens, and carrots—while the other is planted with garlic, which will be ready to harvest next summer. For the remaining beds that aren’t being used this winter, I make sure to mulch them. Mulching these beds helps protect the soil, keep it healthy, and ensures they’re ready to go when I’m ready to plant in the spring. Here’s why I mulch my raised beds, even when they’re not in use.
Leaves are one of my favorite mulches to use in my garden beds in the winter. We have plenty in our yard!
Nature gives us leaves for a reason—don’t bag them up and toss them! Reuse them to improve your soil and keep your garden ready for the next season.
Happy Gardening!
