I admit I spend a lot of time in my vegetable and flower gardens, keeping them healthy and looking good, but I haven’t put the same time and effort into my lawn. And, as a result it resembles a patchy mess more than a healthy, thriving lawn. If you are not happy with how your lawn is looking either, with some effort and using these helpful pointers, you can achieve a much better-looking lawn.
- Know your grass type: Different grass types have different needs in terms of watering, sunlight, and mowing. Knowing your grass type will help you tailor your lawn care routine accordingly.
- Get a Soil Test: Healthy soil = healthy grass. Before you start, consider getting a soil test to determine what your soil needs. This helps you understand your soils nutrient levels and adjust accordingly with amendments. The soil test will give you the amounts you will need for fertilizing and other soil treatment products, to avoid over or under fertilizing.
- Mow Smart, Not Short: Frequent mowing with shorter cuts might seem like the key to a neat lawn, but it actually stresses the grass. Mow less often, keeping the blades around 2-3 inches tall. This shades the roots, helping them retain moisture, and encourages the grass to grow thicker, naturally crowding out weeds.
- Water Wisely: Deep watering less frequently encourages roots to grow deeper, reaching down for that precious H2O. Over time this practice will strenthen your lawn, making it more drought tolerant. The best time to water your lawn is early in the morning, when the temperatures are cooler and less water will be lost to evaporation.
- Compost: Compost is a great addition to your lawn. Compost acts like a vitamin boost for your soil. It adds organic matter, which feeds the beneficial microbes living in the soil. These microbes help break down nutrients into forms that your grass can easily absorb.
