Every year I try to add something new to my garden. In my vegetable garden, I may try new vegetables, add an arch, or construct a new bed. A few years ago I started growing herbs directly in my raised beds rather than in seperate containers. The benefits of growing herbs in your garden far outweighs their culinary use. They not only deter some pests, but attract beneficial insects to your garden, organically helping to control pests. Herbs are very easy to grow. Begin with favorites such as thyme, rosemary, oregano, marjoram and chives. And every garden with tomatoes needs basil to prevent tomato hornworms.
Adding charm to your garden doesn’t have to break the bank. Consider adding garden art like statues, birdbaths, or metal sculptures. Garden art can draws your eye toward areas you want to showcase.
Adding bold colored pots full of flowers and a new patio umbrella is not expensive and can create a space perfect for relaxing after a day of gardening. Last year, I added new pots and an umbrella in turquoise to my bottom deck for a beach themed area. Inexpensive outdoor pillows were added to the chairs I already had. This year an outdoor palm tree will round out the deck area for a tropical feel. However, it’s worth doing some research and reading things like this Indoor Palm Tree Buying Guide, if you are unsure of the type that would best suit your garden. Then you will be able to get the right information to help you make the perfect choice. Any palm I purchase will have to be brought into my house this winter since it will not overwinter.
Last of all, the simplest and most effective way to make your garden space more exciting has to be to fill it with beautiful bright flowers. Every year I include annuals such as lantanas, zinnias, geraniums and impatiens in my summer garden. Cosmos, black-eyed Susan, and calendula are added to my vegetable garden to attract pollinators and beneficial insects. While annuals are not the most cost effective in the sense they only last one year, they are my one indulgence. I wanted to add spring flowers like violas and pansies to my spring garden. if you are looking for color in particular then sweetpeas are a great choice. I found some beautiful pink and white sweetpeas to grow up the trellis in my vegetable garden. Sweetpeas are one of the first spring flowers you can plant.
I hope this has given you a few ideas to help you add easy additions to create a one of a kind garden on a budget.
