Just like our garden plants wilt under the summer sun, the birds are also struggling during this heatwave. By following just a few tips we can keep our gardens thriving and our birds happy, even in the hottest months.
Water, Water Everywhere:
- Extra Water: Provide multiple bird baths throughout your yard. This gives them options for finding water, and spreads them out to avoid overcrowding. You can use a mix of ground level basins, pedestal baths, and hanging baths to cater to different bird preferences.
- Keep it Cool: Refresh the bird baths daily with cool water. On scorching days, add a chunk of ice to each bath to keep the water refreshing for longer. This also helps reduce algae growth and mosquito breeding.
Shade is Key:
- Natural Air Conditioning: Birds seek refuge from the sun just like we do. Plant a variety of native trees, shrubs, and vines to create a cool, shady haven for them. This landscaping will also provide them with insects to munch on.
- Nest Boxes : If you have nest boxes, make sure they are placed in shaded areas. Since they aren’t as insulated as natural cavities, shade helps keep chicks from overheating.
Be a Bird Bath Housekeeper:
- Keep The Water Clean: Regularly clean your bird baths to prevent algae growth and the spread of bacteria. A quick scrub with a brush and mild soap once a week will do the trick. Rinse thoroughly afterwards to remove any soap residue.
Here are some additional tips to help birds during the summer heat, including feeding:
- Food for Thought: During hot weather, birds expend more energy trying to stay cool. Offer high-energy foods like suet cakes, mealworms, or peanuts (chopped for smaller birds). If you use feeders, make sure to place them in shaded areas to keep the food from spoiling.
Remember, a little extra care can go a long way in helping the birds in your yard stay healthy and happy throughout the hot summer months. Enjoy watching them cool off and appreciate the beauty they bring to your yard!
Happy Gardening!
