If you are like most people, you take great pride in your garden. You may spend a lot of time in your garden to keep it looking good , but even the most meticulous gardeners can sometimes struggle with keeping their garden looking it’s best. I know my flower beds can often “get out of control” with weeds after a few heavy rains. Not only do the flowers love it, but the weeds thrive!
I’d like to share this contributed post that will offer tips for keeping your garden beautiful.
1) Watering
One of the most important aspects of keeping your garden looking beautiful is ensuring that your plants are properly hydrated. Depending on the type of plants you have, they may need to be watered daily or just a few times per week. Be sure to check the soil before watering to ensure that it is not already saturated.
One of my garden goals for next year is adding drip irrigation to my raised bed vegetable garden. It’s a great way to reduce the amount of time you spend watering and the investment in a drip irrigation system is well worth the money. These systems can be set up to water your plants automatically, saving you a lot of time, effort and money.
Another tip for watering is to try and do it in the morning or evening when it is cooler outside. Watering during the day’s heat can cause evaporation, which means that your plants are not getting as much water as they need. In the heat of summer, it can also burn the leaves if you are not watering at the base of the leaves.
Finally, ensure you use the right type of water for your plants. When I water my house plants with tap water I let the water sit a day or two so that the chlorine can evaporate. Chlorine can harm some plants, so it is best to avoid using it if possible.
2) Lawn Care
I’ll have to admit, my husband does all the mowing at our house. We have over two acres to mow! My job is weed eating around my raised bed vegetable gardens, and getting all my garden decor out of the yard before he mows lol.
But, lawn care is one of the most important aspects of keeping your garden looking beautiful. A well-manicured lawn can make all the difference in the overall appearance of your garden. Here are some tips for keeping your lawn looking its best:
–Mow regularly and at the correct height. Depending on your grass type, you will need to adjust your mowing schedule and height accordingly.
–Water deeply and less often. Watering deeply encourages root growth, which results in a healthier lawn. Watering less often also helps to prevent disease and fungus growth.
–Fertilize regularly. Fertilizing provides essential nutrients that help promote growth and health in your lawn. Be sure to follow the manufacturer’s directions when applying fertilizer.
By following these simple tips, you can ensure that your lawn will always look its best. If you are unsure of how to care for your particular type of lawn, be sure to consult with Big League Lawns to ensure you get the right advice. 3) Planting
When it comes to planting, you can do a few things to ensure that your plants always look their best. First, make sure that you are using the correct type of soil for your plants. Different plants have different soil requirements, so it is essential to use the right type of soil to ensure proper growth.
–Choose the right plant for the season you are growing in. A visit to your local nursery will provide you with an idea of what’s growing in your area.
–Mulch, mulch, mulch. Your plants and your back will thank you for it. Plants do not like to compete with weeds. Mulching will decrease the need for weeding and watering. In the hot summer, it helps keep the soil moist.
–Follow the directions on your seed packet or plant tag for planting depth, spacing, and sun requirements. After planting, keep the soil moist for the first week to get the roots established.
–Fertilize with an organic fertilizer throughout the garden season. Use the correct fertilizer according to what you are planting. Blooming plants, bushes, lawns, vegetables or fruits have different nutrient needs. Fertilize according to directions on the package. More is not better!
In conclusion, following these simple tips can help you keep your garden looking its best all year round. Taking proper care of your plants and lawn ensures that your garden will always be a source of pride.
Live, laugh, garden!
