One common mistake gardeners make is planting their vegetables during the wrong season. It’s easy to get excited when you see those tomato plants in the nursery, but if you don’t know when your last frost of the season is, plant the tomato, and you have a frost…..you loose the tomato plant. It’s a waste of money, and a leaves you disappointed. Or, not sure when your first frost of the season is, you will plant to late, and again loose your vegetables to a freeze or frost. To find you last and first frost just “google” average last frost and average first frost in your city. Write those down, and plan your garden planting around those dates.
Each vegetable has a season it thrives in, and getting the timing right is a key to successful gardening.
This seasonal plan is written for the Chattanooga, Tennessee/North Georgia area where my garden is. But even if you don’t live in this area, it is easy to adjust the dates. Find your last frost date and count back 4-6 weeks to plan your cool season garden. Cool season vegetables include the leaf vegetables, and root vegetables. Once you find your last frost date, plant warm season fruiting vegetables when all danger of frost is over. I keep an eye on the weather to be sure their is no weather below 5O degrees.
