One of my newsletter subscribers recently reached out with a great question—he just purchased a 3×4 elevated raised bed on legs and wanted to know what he could grow in it this fall, what kind of soil to use, and how to make the most of this smaller space.
If you’ve been eyeing those waist-high garden beds or already have one ready to go, here’s everything you need to know to get growing.

Why Elevated Beds Are a Great Choice
There’s a lot to love about these beds on legs, especially for new or busy gardeners:
-
No bending over – perfect if you have back, hip, or knee issues.
-
Great drainage – they won’t get waterlogged like in-ground beds.
-
Fewer weeds – you’re starting with fresh soil and not dealing with invasive weeds.
-
Easier pest control – fewer visits from ground-dwelling pests like slugs or rabbits.
-
Portable – some have wheels and can be moved for sun or protection.
But There Are a Few Drawbacks
Before you start dreaming of tomato jungles or sprawling squash vines, know this:
-
Limited depth – most elevated beds are 8–12 inches deep. That’s fine for leafy greens and shallow-rooted vegetables, but too shallow for large root crops or tall plants like indeterminate tomatoes. When choosing root crops like carrots, choose the short varieties. You can also experiment with container or “patio” varieties of peppers or tomatoes.
-
Smaller growing space – you’ll need to plant strategically using a space-saving method like square foot gardening.
-
More frequent watering – because they drain well, they dry out faster, especially in warm fall weather.
Let’s Talk Soil (Skip the Potting Mix!)
For your elevated raised bed, you want a nutrient-rich soil made for vegetables—not regular potting soil. Potting mix is designed for containers and houseplants. It’s too lightweight and doesn’t have enough nutrients for food crops.
Instead, look for a bagged organic raised bed soil or vegetable garden mix at your local garden center or big box store.
Here are a few good options to look for:
-
Espoma Organic Raised Bed Mix – designed specifically for raised beds
-
Miracle-Gro Performance Organics Raised Bed Mix – OMRI listed and beginner-friendly
-
Kellogg Organic Raised Bed & Potting Mix – affordable and widely available
-
FoxFarm Happy Frog or Ocean Forest – rich in compost and ready to plant
If you want to improve your mix even more, you can stir in a little compost (store-bought or homemade) before planting.
** Make sure your bed has drainage holes, so excess water doesn’t pool and rot your plants.

What to Grow This Fall in a 3×4 Elevated Bed
Cool-season vegetables are the perfect fit for fall—and they thrive in the depth and space you have.
Here’s a list of fall-friendly plants for shallow beds:
-
Leafy greens: Lettuce, spinach, arugula, Swiss chard, mustard greens
-
Root crops (in 10–12″ depth): Radishes, baby carrots, beets, green onions
-
Herbs: Parsley, cilantro, dill
-
Flowers (for pollinators and pest control): Calendula, pansies, violas
Square Foot Gardening Plan for a 3×4 Bed (12 Squares)
To make the most of your space, divide your 3×4 bed into 12 squares (1 square foot each). Here’s a sample planting plan that mixes vegetables, herbs, and flowers:

A Few More Tips for Success
Watering:
Elevated beds dry out quickly. Water consistently—daily in warm weather—and consider adding mulch like shredded leaves to hold in moisture.
Pest Control:
Cool-season pests like aphids, cabbage worms, and flea beetles are still active in fall. You can add mini hoops and insect netting to keep them out.
Season Extension:
Want to keep your greens going into winter? Drape frost cloth over the hoops for extra protection on chilly nights.
An elevated raised bed is a fantastic choice for fall gardening, especially for quick-growing greens, herbs, and compact root crops. With the right soil, smart spacing, and a little protection, your raised bed can be productive well into the cooler months.
