Bees, butterflies, and other pollinators need water just like we do, especially during hot summer days. But they can’t land in deep birdbaths or puddles safely. The good news? You can help with one super-simple project that takes just five minutes (and makes a great kid-friendly garden craft, too).
You can build a quick pollinator water station using things you probably already have around the house.
🛠️ What You’ll Need:
-
A shallow dish, saucer, or pie tin
-
Small rocks, flat marbles, or pebbles
-
Fresh water
-
Optional: A decorative tray, flowerpot stand, or something to lift it off the ground. This is a simple butterfly “puddler” I made several years ago using a terra cotta pot, saucer, and painted with acrylic paint. I used a butterfly stencil. I also added a little sand. Adding sand or soil to a butterfly puddler helps provide essential minerals and nutrients for butterflies. Butterflies, like many insects, require minerals and salts, which they often obtain from damp soil or mud puddles.

🧑🌾 How to Make It:
-
Fill your dish with a layer of small stones or marbles. These give pollinators a safe place to land while they drink. Add sand or compost if you wish.
-
Pour in clean water, just enough to come close to the top of the stones—but not completely cover them.
-
Place it in a shady, calm spot near your pollinator-friendly flowers.
-
Refill it daily, especially during hot weather when water evaporates quickly.
🌼 Make It Pretty (and Fun for Kids)
This is a great garden craft to do with children! Let them:
-
Pick out colorful marbles or beach pebbles
-
Decorate the dish with non-toxic paint
-
Check and refill the water each morning as their special garden task
Bonus: Add a small flowerpot underneath the dish to lift it off the ground and keep it clean. It adds height and charm!
Pollinators are essential to our food gardens, and they’re working hard all day long. Offering them a clean, safe drink is a small but meaningful way to support them—and it’s beautiful, too.
So if you’ve got 5 minutes and a few garden odds and ends, you can create a simple oasis for bees and butterflies right in your backyard.
Happy Gardening!
