DIY House Vent Pumpkin

I bought this old vent at an estate last year and intended to place it in my garden.  It sat in the storage unit until one of my FB friends sent me a picture of an old vent painted like a pumpkin.  Woo hoo!  A project for my front yard fall décor.  A DIY House Vent Pumpkin was in the making.

I gave the vent a coat of orange spray paint.  A Krylon Brand spray paint is a good choice for metal.  I chose the color Pumpkin Orange , which was a dark pumpkin color.

This is the first coat.  It took a couple to get the look I wanted.  Next, I used a wine cork that I had painted green to create a stem.  I used E6000 glue to keep the cork in place.  I use this glue for many things.  It adheres to metal, glass, plastic, and ceramic, any many other surfaces.  Green Sphagnum moss added a little interest to the stem, again gluing the moss with E6000 glue.

Use an old vent to create a one of a kind DIY House Vent Pumpkin

So,  Charlie Brown, the Great Pumpkin has arrived.  It is nestled in the garden with my rusted containers of orange zinnias.

Old house vents remind me of pumpkins. Creating a DIY House Vent Pumpkin was easy with a few coats of paint, a wine cork, and a little sphagnum moss

These aluminum house vents should be available for $10.00 to $15.00  I have paid $7.50-$10.00 and even found a couple on the side of the road.  Flea Markets, Yard Sales, Estate Sales, and Facebook Marketplace are all good sources.  I found my last 3 on Facebook marketplace.  Galvanized vents can be found in Antique shops but cost anywhere from $50.00 and up.  You wouldn’t want to paint those, but they make great yard art.  Another idea, which I have yet to do, is to call a local roofer and tell them you want to buy any old house vents they may remove when putting on a new roof.  Most people want to replace the vents too.   I hope you enjoyed this DIY HOUSE VENT PUMPKIN and hope you are able to find one to create your own pumpkin patch.

A Quick Note…

Gardenchick is a place for gardeners, flea market fanatics, lovers of the farmhouse look, and purveyors of all things rusty!

I’m not sure when my fascination with junk began, but gardening was in my blood from an early age.  I remember my grandmother could throw a few seeds out and have the prettiest flowers.  Sweet peas were rampant beside the front porch.  I can see her now, bent over pulling weeds, and I find myself doing the same thing anytime I’m in the yard.  My dad was raised on a large farm, and even though he moved away, and we always lived in the city, he had a garden.  He had me help him  plant a garden in May before he died in August.  So you can see, gardening just comes naturally to me.

I can’t explain the love of rusty and all things chippy, but I have dug through more barns and sheds than I would like to admit to bring out a rusty wagon or old chicken feeder.

So, I hope you will follow along, and we can learn a few things together.  I’ll be sharing gardening ideas, my flea market finds, and thrifty ways to repurpose.
