Why do you bring this stuff home? Have you ever heard that from a family member? Because they were inexpensive, an I think they deserve a bar stool makeover.
I love a project and these stools were perfect. They were found at a local thrift store for 10.00 each and I have had them stored away for months. Since I needed to do a blog post, I thought this was a great time to bring them out and give them a bar stool makeover.
First, I pulled off the old red checked material. I think they had been recovered once with an old plastic tablecloth. What a mess underneath. This was going to be more work than I had anticipated.
Cleaned and scrubbed, they looked a little more promising. A little…..
Now, what to cover them with? I didn’t want anything too bright. I had some oil cloth with flowers in reds, yellows, and blues, but no, if I decided to sell, that might limit them to someone with those colors. Then I saw them. The basket of burlap coffee bags. I had to pick one that I didn’t mind cutting apart. So I chose one, then sprayed the stools chocolate brown to go with the burlap.
I laid out the top and bottom parts of the stool and cut pieces to fit. Again, this was proving to be more trouble than I thought. How was I going to keep the cloth around the pieces until they could be replaced on the stool? Glue definitely wouldn’t work, and I couldn’t nail it on. I settled on lacing it up with twine. This also allowed me to tighten it up.
The top piece finished.
And then the bottom.
Put back together, that old stool looks pretty good.
So don’t overlook that bargain. It may be a diamond in the rough. Now, on to finish the second stool.

Fantastic makeover!! I must admit that I probably would have taken them to the junkyard with all that rust. But you saved them!
